Needles In The Haystack ----------------------- Set in the rainforest of Northern New South Wales, on the East coast of Australia, the book tells the story of Sally and Anton, two recent English migrants. Looking for Anton's cousin, Max, they arrive in Goonabah, a lost town somewhere on the Queensland border. Here they discover that Australia isn't quite what they thought it would be. Homeless and disorientated, they end up living in the local bus before finding themselves a house in the hills. After a while, to Sally's total dismay, Anton starts using heroin and fairly soon their paths begin to diverge. Anton ends up in Sydney with another woman, squatting and hanging around in Kings Cross and Sally finds peace and a new understanding of the land, in an alternative community in the heart of the Australian bush. As time goes by, the lives of Sally and Anton begin to converge again and they meet at a point very different from the one where they parted. Often funny, always disturbing, 'Needles In The Haystack' is a powerful commentary on the fringe dwellers of European Australian society. A picture of a subculture that's growing rapidly in both strength and numbers. * * *
