*** ATTENTION *** February 7, 1994 The following is a list of clergy, for the most part Roman Catholic, located in the Chiapas area who have been threatened by the Mexican Government, which has falsely and unjustly accused them of supporting, encouraging, starting, and participating in the Chiapas Rebel Uprising of January 1, 1994. The Mexican Government has no solid evidence connecting any of these people to the uprising or to any other involvement with the Zapatista National Liberation Army. This list was orginally published by the Mexican Government, put together by going down the roster of the Bishop of the Chiapas, in an article distributed to Mexican newspapers and magazines. Evidently, they hadn't considered the posibility that the list could be used to unveil to the world the lies of the Mexican Government. Although the Zapatista National Liberation Army has retreated to the hills beyond Chiapas, the Government and Army continue to take prisoners and make accusations against the peasants of Chiapas. It is believed that by distributing this list to as many people as possible, three things can be accomplished. First, the mere act of distributing the list throughout the world increases the safety of the lives of the people on the list, their families, and their associates. Second, that people will write to President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, to express their anger at these unjust accusations and threats, and letting him know that they hold him personally accountable for the lives and welfare of these individuals. The Mexican government has responded favorably to this sort of international public pressure in the past, and will hopefully do the same in this situation. Third, that people will be made aware of the conditons that the people of not only Chiapas, but throughout Latin America, are subjected to each day. Where indicated, certain individuals are from a country or state other than Chiapas. If you are interested in receiving more information regarding the Chiapas, including general information, address's, phones, and faxes of specific individuals to write to, or any questions you may have, please leave email at either : ceridwyn@hebron.connected.com (before Feb. 25), or ceridwyn@velcro.cis.temple.edu (anytime) or write to C.I.S.P.L.A. 1224 So.
