For well over 2 years the Gartocher residents have been involved in an amazing community struggle to stop ruthless businessman William Combe operate a waste business in their street. From concrete-filled fridge freezers blocking the road to home made traffic calming measures, the battle has seen imaginative direct action alongside the development of real community, with the involvement of kids and pensioners and the creation of a street community caravan.
Sex & Politics (Sat, 3pm)
This workshop will be focused on two of the most controversial (and interesting)
topics around. A local sexuality activist and educator will begin the session
by talking about sex. Sexuality is often represented as non-political because
it is either a personal issue or naturally determined. When it is understood
as political, sexuality is often described as a minority issue. The speaker
will argue that sexuality is not only political but an issue for everyone. After
this short talk there will be an interactive activity involving marking pens,
dirty words and a good blether.
Fun guerrilla - pranks, hoaxes and buffoonery (Sat 21st, 4pm)
Claimants Fight Back (Sun, 12-1pm)
We don't need to accept being bullied and harrased by the benefit authorities,
we don't need to put up with our benefits being threatened and cut. By joining
together with other claimants we can support each other and start to fight back!
Whether you are unemployed, a single parent, on sickness or disability benefits,
low paid and on housing benefit, or whatever, you're welcome to this workshop
to discuss with others in the same situation what we can do to improve our situation.
People involved in Edinburgh Claimants will be present and describe recent and
present day claimants activity in Edinburgh.
Solidarity with Refugees (sun, 1-2pm)
Introduced by a speaker from North Edinburgh Welcomes Refugees, who will describe
the activities this local group have developed in their community, the council
schemes of Greater Pilton. Plus information on the struggle of Edinburgh resident
Bakkari Adoui to stop his deportation back to Tanzania, where he has been imprisoned
and tortured.
Direct Action in Scotland against the nuclear threat (Sun, 4-5.30pm)
Direct action against the nuclear convoys to and from Faslane, direct action
against the nuclear bases at Faslane and Coulport, updates on the latest developments
at Rosyth - all described by people from Faslane Peace Camp and Trident Ploughshares
who are directly involved.
Coordinating Efforts - Reekies Rebals (Sun, 4pm)
This discussion session will be facilitated by two local activists who are interested
in seeing greater coordination and communication among political and community
organisations in Edinburgh. We hope that this discussion will provide the starting
point for developing an umbrella organisation and its role. Do you want social
events for politically minded people? A web site providing information about
how people can get involved? A newsletter describing the activities of member
organisations?
All the above? None of the above? Something else entirely? Come along if you
want to contribute.
Menstrual Cycle Awareness (Sunday, 3-5pm, women only)
In the course of this workshop it will cover information about anatomy of female
organs, cyclical hormonal and physical changes and outline methods of cycle
charting. Much of this information has been suppressed from common knowledge.
Despite the restrictions of time there will be space to discuss our varied experiences
of the menstrual cycle. These are some of the potential uses of charting your
menstrual cycle :
